Freedom Elementary School

Lawton Public Schools

A PARTNERSHIP CREATION EDUCATION COMPLEX

Freedom Elementary School is a state-of-the-art educational complex encompassing 33 acres at Fort Sill Army Garrison and operated by Lawton Public Schools. This project was accomplished through a partnership between local, state and federal civilian and military leadership. The brownfield development site required significant landfill and floodplain mitigation prior to construction.

Despite its size the facility enjoys greater safety and security than traditional schools due to secure interior and exterior sightlines, secured perimeter via access control management and CCTV systems, secure entrance vestibules and four FEMA compliant tornado safe rooms, which are able to withstand winds of up to 250 mph. In addition, the complex complies with federal Anti-Terrorism Force Protection criteria which include blast standoff distances, blast-rated windows and doors, a mass notification system and HVAC emergency shut-off controls. The school’s innovative building envelope, lighting and mechanical system designs achieve an energy efficiency performance 30% better than code minimums. When complete Freedom Elementary will achieve USGBC LEED Gold Certification and be the largest elementary school in the state of Oklahoma.
